In the Investigation of metastatic tumour in the left supraclavicular lymph node group, carcinoma of the prostate is often not considered and may therefore be missed. Review of the literature reveals that it is the fourth commonest cause of metastatic deposits in this location as shown in large autopsy series. An enlargement of this lymph node group may be the first evidence of dissemination of prostatic cancer. Three illustrative cases are presented and a method of investigation is described by which the cause of supraclavicular lymphadenopathy and prostatomegaly was easily and quickly established by fine needle aspiration and cytological examination of smears. Acid phosphatase staining of lymph node aspirates may be helpful in the search for the primary.
