Selective peripheral nerve blocks, using either digital, wrist block or infiltration techniques, provide anaesthesia to the digit and part of the hand, but preserve the extrinsic and/or intrinsic motor function and thus allow active movement of the digit during the operation. This technique is useful in certain cases of reconstructive hand surgery. Its application during 17 operations including tenolysis, capsulotomy and tendon grafting is discussed.
