The basic aims of the screening programme are to ensure that the migrant will be physically and mentally capable of standing up to the stresses and strains of emigration and resettlement, and to protect the health of the Australian community. While the rules for admission are firm they are applied sympathetically, and permanent rejection on the grounds of tuberculosis infection Is unlikely, provided the person concerned cooperates in investigation and treatment. The standards of assessment, treatment and control of tuberculosis applied to prospective migrants are basically the same as those applied to cases of tuberculosis discovered In Australia. The standards are not necessarily the same as those applied in the applicant's home country, a point which is sometimes overlooked and which gives rise to more friction and misunderstanding than any other.
