Many problems afflict contemporary Japanese youth. Among them I shall take up for discussion here those which concern students, namely, school phobia, student apathy and student radicalism. For I think these are the most important youth problems of Japan, because of the impact they are exerting upon the whole nation. In fact, I doubt whether the student problems in Western countries, extremely critical as they may have become at one time or another, have ever so pervaded and affected the very fibres of society as in Japan. Compared with the student problems, other youth problems like delinquency or drug abuse, which are reported to be quite serious in some Western countries, are pretty much confined to a certain sector of population in Japan and more or less under control. It is also interesting to note in this regard that the suicide rate of youth, which used to be quite high for Japan, has sharply dropped in recent years and come close to the level of Western countries, seemingly in reverse proportion to the increasing magnitude of student problems.
