The antibiotic kitasamycin is not new, but is critically reappraised by its use in general practice. An initial in‐vitro study of 3,072 fresh clinical isolates compared the sensitivity of kitasamycin and erythromycin. Kitasamycin proved better. The clinical results concerned 81 patients with respiratory infections, 10 with wound or soft tissue involvement and three with urinary tract infections. These groups were subdivided into patients with a complete bacteriological and clinical follow up, and those where only a further clinical assessment was made. The conclusion is drawn that kitasamycin is a useful macrolide antibiotic with a place in general practice. In addition to flexibility of dosage, more organisms are sensitive to it than to erythromycin. Side effects were found to be minimal.
