A new curriculum based on stated objectives, with the expected student outcomes and the learning strategies clearly expressed, has been introduced into final year medicine in the University of New South Wales School of Obstetrics and Gynæcology. Because this curriculum required students to have considerable ability in affective and psychomotor areas as well as cognitive skill, a new assessment scheme based on student/patient Interaction with “feedback” was devised. This type of assessment was coupled with patient‐management problems to allow diagnostic assessment and then certifying assessment at a standard of competence equivalent to that expected of a resident medical officer. The scheme is outlined as to its development and introduction, its problems and its strengths. It has received wide commendation from students and staff who have been associated with it during the initial year of its introduction and widespread interest has been taken in its development. Further steps are being taken to improve it and assess its continuing Impact on medical education.
