Clonidine (Catapres) has been intravenously administered for 11 acute hypertensive episodes in nine patients with hypertension. In all but one episode, a dosage of 150 μg produced a satisfactory reduction in blood pressure. It produced its effect within five to 10 minutes, reached maximum effectiveness in 30 minutes and lasted two to four hours. No serious side effects were noted.
