Two hundred and fifty women attending an antenatal clinic completed a questionnaire on analgesic consumption and the results of the questionnaire were correlated with the results of chemical testing of urine for salicylate and phenacetin metabolites. Thirty‐four women said that they had taken analgesics within 36 hours of attendance at the clinic and metabolites were detected in 30 of them. Metabolites were also found in the urine of 10 women who denied recent analgesic consumption. Screening of urine for salicylates by a strip test may be warranted because of the unreliability of interrogation.
