A recent article described the application of oestrogen assays as routine tests in the management of pregnant patients. This present article deals with the applications of oestrogen assays in nonpregnant patients. Measurement of oestrogen production provides information on overall ovarian activity and is particularly useful in the investigation and management of infertility. Complementary information is also required on ovulation and function of the resulting corpus luteum and this is obtained by measurement of progesterone production. This article deals mainly with the application of “total” urinary oestrogen and pregnanediol assays in this context.
