Prevalence rates of chronic respiratory disease were determined in Medina, an outer suburban industrial area situated adjacent to a large industrial complex. When compared with the population of Busselton, a rural community situated 130 miles south of Medina, the population of Medina exhibited significantly higher prevalence of chronic bronchitis and repeated chest illnesses, and a lower prevalence of hay fever. Within the Medina population, an independent and significant association was found between the length of residence in the area and the prevalence of chronic bronchitis. These findings do not support the practice of planning housing within proximity to new heavy industrial development.
