An account of psychiatry is given as observed in the People's Republic of China in October, 1973. The incidence of psychiatric disorders and their treatment, including the use of acupuncture, is described. Aspects of training of workers in psychiatry, the delivery of mental health care and the effects of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution on psychiatric management are mentioned, and two psychiatric facilities are described.
