Results of a survey of the diphtheria and poliomyelitis immunization status of the population aged over three months and under five years in two small but defined areas in western New South Wales in February, 1972, are presented. In the smaller area (total population, 517; children in relevant age group, 81, 40% Aboriginal), 29·6% had no diphtheria immunization and 27·2% no poliomyelitis immunization, while in the larger area (total population, 3,152; children in relevant age group, 360, 21% Aboriginal), the proportions were 18·3% and 17·8% respectively. It is suggested that these differing rates are due in part to the availability of facilities for immunization, but other factors such as the proportion of Aboriginal children probably contribute.
