This paper records the migration of a piece of wire which entered the body through the skin of the left little toe. Twenty months later it was removed from the right lung, having traversed the inferior vena cava and the right side of the heart. During this time, the patient had what were almost certainly septicæmic episodes. The possible sites of entry of foreign bodies to the venous system, the vagaries of their migration and the historical aspects are briefly discussed.
