A double‐blind trial of lorazepam (Ativan), a new diazepine, and diazepam (Vailum) an established and widely used diazepine, was undertaken. The two drugs were equally and highly effective in relieving symptoms of anxiety. Both drugs were equally effective for both emotional and physical symptoms of anxiety. Side effects were minimal and no evidence of dependence was found. The drug is considered to be effective and safe and may be expected to be of similar efficiency to existing anxiolytic agents. Study data allowed some comment on the nature of cultural differences In drug response to be made.
