Two methods of total parenteral nutrition of paediatric patients are described and compared. The complication rate was minimized with a method based on the intensive care concept, in conjunction with improved methods of preparation and delivery. Mortality attributable to the technique was reduced from 83% to 8%. Acidosis and hyperammonaemia were not encountered.
