A complex, multidisciplinary organization, such as a modern teaching hospital, must develop as an organization if it is to survive and grow. Modern management techniques must be accompanied by changed attitudes, by recognition of people's capabilities and the acknowledgement that a team will always perform better than individuals. An understanding of the behavioural sciences can help a hospital to improve its performance and satisfy the needs of the patients and staff. The Royal Melbourne Hospital has demonstrated that results can be achieved by developing the management capabilities of the health team.
