The need for more child care facilities for children has been demonstrated by recent statistics. A relatively new form—family day care—which is home based rather than centre based, is discussed. A description of some American and Australian models is given, and available research is reviewed. Some recommendations as to its relevance for future social planning of child care in Australia are given.
