Discussion of the liberalization of laws governing abortion is a highly emotive subject and leads to strong polarization of views within the community. It is the opinion of the writers that attempts to alter the laws are unnecessary in view of the current interpretation of existing laws. In fact it may well be that a change in the present law could lead to more rigid interpretations and possibly make the position even more difficult. The world‐wide trend towards a more liberal interpretation of indications for termination has led to study of the type of people seeking termination, their contraceptive practices and any changes that occur with the liberalization of the laws. These subjects are discussed.
