The treatment of severe preeclamptic toxaemia, with or without convulsions, should be directed towards rapid reduction of the blood pressure with a hypotensive agent and the simultaneous administration of an anticonvulsant. The commonly used drugs are discussed. It is concluded that the administration of diazoxide with diazepam offers a satisfactory combination of actions for the treatment of hypertensive crisis, particularly during labour.
