The evidence for a causative relationship between the Epstein‐Barr virus and infectious mononucleosis is reviewed, and results of a study of the age incidence of antibody to this virus in an Australian population are presented. A comparison is made with the findings of surveys in other populations and the reasons for any differences are discussed.
