In his description of incest as being both “flre and ice”, Sartre was referring to its tendency to polarize human attitudes and to create ambivalence. But he might also have been suggesting that incest may be considered as akin to one of the elements. For in reality, and without denying its evocative potential, incest is basically a fact of life. As such, incest comes within the province of the behavioural sciences and is amenable to study. This present article will essentially review a recent monograph (Maisch, 1973) which examines social, anthropological, sociological, psychoanalytic and comparative forensic aspects of incest, as well as detailing a study performed hy the author, Maisch, on 78 cases of incest presenting to German courts.
