Australian mortality rates from coronary heart disease rose steadily in men until the mid 1960s from which time the rates stabilized, then fell in the most recent period. Similar changes were seen in the female rates although these were much lower. Cohort analysis suggests that the rise in mortality in men was due to increased exposure of successive generations to coronary risk factors. The failure of coronary mortality rates to continue to rise is partly due to improved medical management, but it is suggested that, in addition, the marked fall in mortality from hypertension and its complications has had a major effect.
