Under provisions of the National Health Act, 1953–1972, and related regulations, griseofulvin can be ordered as a pharmaceutical benefit only with the prescribed written authority of a Commonwealth Director of Health. This paper outlines certain aspects of prescribing griseofulvin in South Australia, as a pharmaceutical benefit, during the period January 1, 1972, to June 30, 1972. The aspects considered are: 1. An analysis of applications received and authorities issued. 2. The figures for claims for medical benefit items 1761 and 1764. For various reasons, an accurate statistical study of the subject cannot be developed on the information presently available. However, it is hoped to show some of the difficulties experienced by prescribers wishing to order griseofulvin as a pharmaceutical benefit, and some of the problems facing departmental officers in assessing applications.
