Two cases of an acute encephalopathic reaction following clioquinol intake are reported. The reaction began about 12 hours after the intake of the drug and was dominated by a severe failure of recent memory with headache and confusion. No clinical evidence of any local neurological defect could be detected, and improvement began on the third day. Recovery was virtually complete except for a gap in memory for the acute illness. Several similar instances have been reported in the literature, and acute exposure to ciioquinol in animals can produce a similar clinical picture, with pathological changes in the hippocampus and amygdala. It is important to be aware of the possibility of this syndrome so that ciioquinol intake will be terminated, thus avoiding the possibility of permanent memory defects.
