In 9 children with acute myeloid or monocytic leukaemia, all 5 who achieved complete or good partial remissions had low levels of fetal haemoglobin, in contrast with high levels in 4 who failed to achieve remission. It is suggested that fetal haemoglobin levels at diagnosis may be of value in the prediction of achieving remission.
