The speech of 18 stutterers was observed for evidence of change after treatment for three weeks with orally administered haloperidol. Despite subjective reports of improved speech from 14 subjects, samples of speech, some of which were covertly obtained, showed substantial improvement (50%) in only four subjects. The speech scores of eight subjects deteriorated slightly while taking haloperidol. The mean frequency of stuttering for the group fell from 16.7% to 12.3% of syllables spoken. In a smaller group of 10 stutterers who were taking trifluoperazine, the mean frequency of stuttering fell from 10.9% to 10.4% of syllables spoken.
