Although the trend is to admit sick children to hospital, a proportion of these children could be nursed successfully at home if their family doctors had sufficient time and paediatric training or if the children were visited regularly by a hospital‐based home care team. Caring for sick children at home prevents the emotional stress to the child caused by separation from his mother and admission to hospital, while at the same time strengthening the mother‐ child bond. A home care scheme based at a London teaching hospital is described and its advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
