There are nearly 40 years of successful experience in Tasmania of providing general practitioner services to rural areas with a flexible financial arrangement whereby the doctor is paid a salary for providing “free service” during regular hours and receives a fee for service to patients seen during weekends, evenings and public holidays. The system provides an alternative to the traditional method of payment of general practitioners. It is suggested that extension of the service to urban areas on an experimental basis would be of value.
