This article reports a preliminary sociological study of junior resident medical officers in 16 hospitals in New South Wales. Unhappiness, resulting in some rebellion, was endemic among the residents. Suggestions are made on possible ways to improve the situation. Further studies are at present being undertaken in New South Wales, to explore this problem in more depth.
