The term “cardiomyopathy” is defined. One hundred and twenty‐nine cases of cardiomyopathy were studied haemodynamically and cineo‐ angiographically at St Vincent's Hospital during the years 1966 to 1971. They were classified on a functional basis and on an aetiological basis as far as was possible. Important advances have been made in the functional classification of this disease, but all too often the aetiological basis remains obscure. A high index for suspicion for the diagnosis of this relatively common form of heart disease is important as early diagnosis and appropriate management may favourably influence the prognosis.
