Two hundred and fifty‐seven adult patients admitted to hospital with presumed acute heart disease were studied for the presence of Coxsackie B virus infection. Evidence of active infection was found in 31 patients. Besides being present in patients with Bornholm disease and myopericarditis, the infection was found in 10% of those with acute myocardial infarction. The role played by viruses in heart disease is not fully understood, but the possibility that myocarditis may, on occasions, be confused with myocardial infarction has been considered. Further studies of viral heart disease may be fruitful and could lead to the production of protective vaccines.
