The presence of hypnosis throughout the ages and covering all races indicates that it is a part of man's heredity. An explanation is given as to why a condition known for such a long time has not been employed more frequently. The reason why hypnosis is now attracting special interest is indicated. Some characteristics of the hypnotic state and the advantages and disadvantages of its use in medicine are outlined. As well as the present main uses of hypnosis being mentioned, its future and potential are suggested. Hypnosis can considerably enlarge the extent of preventive psychiatry. Aspects of mental processes as seen during the state of hypnosis are given place. Also, the importance of hypnosis for general practitioners and psychiatrists is stressed.
