A diagnosis of rubella was made in 100 pregnant women in the spring and early summer of 1971. The result of the pregnancy was unknown in 10 patients, while follow up of the remaining 90 pregnancies gave the following results: (i) early spontaneous abortion or delayed menses occurred in 20 (22‐2%) patients; (ii) three women (3‐3%) aborted spontaneously within one week of infection; (iii) therapeutic termination was carried out in 33 women (36‐7%); follow‐up virological examination of the conceptus waa carried out in five instances and rubella virus was grown from one specimen; (iv) pregnancy continued to term on 34 occasions, resulting in 29 apparently normal babies and five in whom there was evidence of congenital rubella infection; (v) congenital abnormalities were noted in one case.
