Amoxycillin, a new semisynthetic penicillin, has a spectrum of activity similar to ampicillin. It is absorbed rapidly from the gastrointestinal tract in the presence and absence of food. Therapeutic blood levels are obtained and maintained, allowing administration three times a day. The half‐life in the absence of renal function is between 7 and 10 hours and dosage should be reduced when renal function is impaired. The drug has been used successfully in patients with urinary and respiratory tract infection.
