A survey of 1,008 strains of E. coli isolated from patients with recurrent urinary infection has shown an overall similarity in distribution of O‐serotypes in Melbourne as found in previous studies in Europe and the U.S.A. However, the proportions of some serotypes do show considerable variation. No significant seasonal incidence has been noted, although the numbers of E. coli isolated increase in the autumn and spring months. The distribution of serotypes in the whole group was similar to that found in patients with recurring E. coli infections. Multiple recurrences with the same O‐serotype were much more common in the male than the female.
