During 1968, peritoneal dialysis was being carried out in the general wards of a large hospital. During 1971, all peritoneal dialyses were carried out in a three‐bed ward. These two systems of caring for patients undergoing this procedure have been compared, and it is apparent that while there was an insignificant fall in the occurrence of major complications, from 25% in 1968 to 21% in 1971, there was a significant fall in mortality from 24% in 1968 to 6% in 1971.
