This paper briefly summarizes the recorded investigations which have been carried out since 1957 on distigmine bromide. The effects on the patient with a neurogenic bladder have been emphasized. A group of 14 patients was studied by the technique of cystography, the effects of intramuscularly administered Ubretid (0.5 mg) being noted. A significant reduction in bladder volume occurred in almost all patients with upper motor neurone lesions. No effect was seen in patients with lower motor neurone lesions. The results on the residual urine volumes of a further twelve patients are presented, showing that both the orally and intramuscularly administered forms of Ubretid are effective in assisting emptying of the upper motor neurone type bladders, provided there is not significant external sphincter spasm causing outlet obstruction.
