Four faecal typhoid carriers were given a 14‐day course of trimethoprim‐sulphamethoxazole (1 to 5 ratio). One subject remained free of salmonella infection for one year thereafter. It Is emphasized that this was a chronic ampicillin‐resistant case. Other workers have obtained much better results. Reference is made to the pharmacology of ampicillin and trimethoprim‐sulphamethoxazole. A plea Is made for research in the pathology of the carrier state. It Is suggested that a 2‐week course of trimethoprim‐sulphamethoxazole is inadequate; however, the drug deserves further trial with more prolonged therapy. There is no easy answer to the carrier problem.
