The complications of influenza are described in the context of severe respiratory disease caused by other respiratory viruses which are commonly epidemic at the same time. The capacities of the various respiratory viruses to predispose to secondary bacterial pneumonia, influenza being the most potent, are compared. The severe impact of influenza epidemics on the elderly and on those with preexisting chronic disease is illustrated, and uncommon fatal cases of influenzal pneumonitis due to gross viral involvement are described.
