Experience In the diagnosis and management of influenza A outbreaks among children in Melbourne due to the A/Hong Kong and A/England/42/72 variants Is described. Influenza Is often a mild disease in young children, but complications may ensue. Antibiotics must be used when required to prevent deaths due to secondary bacterial pneumonia. Amantadine can protect children against A influenza, but Its widespread use is not recommended. Subunit influenza vaccine can safely be given to young children, and its use in children with debilitating diseases should be considered.
