Three cases of mesenteric embolism are presented. Successful embolectomy with salvage of the bowel was performed in two cases. The third was successfully treated with heparin. Better results in this condition can only be achieved by earlier intervention, consequent upon earlier diagnosis. Greater awareness on the part of surgeons of the non‐specific early presentation of superior mesenteric artery occlusion is essential. Laparotomy may be required based on suspicion alone. The place of mesenteric angiography in this condition, though potentially of great importance, has not yet been fully evaluated.
