The immune system plays an important role in the protection against and reaction to some forms of malignancy. Its depression during treatment renders the patient more susceptible to infection. Immunotherapy seems likely to play a more important role in the future in treatment. A practical method for assessing the general competence of the immune system in children with leukæmia has been developed and the rationale behind this is outlined. Recommendations are made for its use in the study of all patients with neoplasia.
