The routine screening of healthy infants for phenylketonuria (PKU) has shown many variations in the underlying biochemical defect and in the degree of associated mental retardation, which does not have to be severe. A Guthrie test was made on all children in Perth in special classes in government primary and secondary schools, and in remedial classes in primary schools, in December, 1970. “Special” refers to mental retardation, “remedial” refers to reading failure with normal intelligence. One thousand one hundred and eighty children were listed, and 90% tested. One child with definite biochemical PKU and an I.Q. of 64 was detected. The implications of the existence of PKU with mild mental deficit are discussed.
