Cataracts in childhood are discussed, with special emphasis on causation and prevention rather than on ophthalmological or surgical aspects. It is emphasized that while clearly defined environmental or genetic causes are apparent in some cases, many cataracts of childhood have a “multifactorial” ætiology. Thus, while some cataracts are completely preventible, a better understanding of causation must necessarily precede a rational approach to the prevention of others.
