Symptoms of mountain sickness can occur in the Australian Alps, especially in females during the premenstrual phase. Sodium and water retention mediated by an excess secretion of aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone is thought to be the mechanism of causation. Whilst aspirin is adequate for mild cases, an aldosterone antagonist is the specific prophylactic and therapeutic agent.
