In 1971 there were 596 pupil midwives and 332 fifth‐year medical students training in Victoria. Provision of 20 deliveries for each pupil midwife and medical student required 245% of all deliveries in Victoria (18,560 of 75,500). This represented 528% (18,560 of 35,147) of all deliveries in the 14 midwifery teaching hospitals In Victoria. Both private and public patients are required for adequate teaching of obstetrics to undergraduates.
