The concept of the American health maintenance organizations is outlined, and some of the advantages and disadvantages to both consumers and providers of care are discussed. It is hoped that consideration of, and even experimentation with, prepaid group practice plans for delivering medical care—as an alternative to the present fee‐for‐service system—might take place in Australia.
