A double‐blind cross‐over trial of cyclobenzaprine, in a dosage of 30 to 60 mg per day, as an adjunct in the management of chronic tension headache, has been conducted in 20 cases. Of 17 patients who completed a one‐month trial period on the active drug, 5 became virtually headache‐free, and the condition of 5 was more than 50% improved. Of 19 patients treated with placebo, none became free of headache, and the condition of only 5 was 50% improved. Side effects were not a problem except in one case, in which treatment had to be stopped because of epigastric discomfort. It is concluded that cyclobenzaprine is worthy of further trial in the treatment of chronic tension headache, since it appears to be as effective as amitriptyline and to have fewer side effects.
