To protect the professional characters and interests of medical practitioners, three medical societies were formed in England and France In the nineteenth century—the Medical Defence Union In 1885, the Medical Protection Society and Le Sou Mhédical. In 1902 they were joined by the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland. Dr Constable sketches the way In which the British societies are run and adds some comments on medical negligence as it affects the British practitioner in particular.
