Because the use of the combination of sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim, Roche) has been shown to be so useful in controlling urinary Infections, it was decided to conduct a double‐blind trial using ampicillin to compare the efficacy of the combination with a known excellent urinary chemotherapeutic agent. Ampicillin was found to have in‐vitro activity against 75% of urinary microorganisms, but to have only 66% clinical response, whereas Bactrim was found to be effective against organisms in over 95% of cases, in both laboratory and clinical results. Bactrim was shown to be the drug of choice in treating urinary tract infection in postoperative and post‐partum patients in a double‐blind trial.
